Overcoming Immense Challenges
Growing up in severe poverty and thought to be ‘another statistic’ from South Central Los Angeles, Olympia’s mother told her that education was the only way to change her life. After a field trip to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, in 1980, Olympia knew she wanted to become a rocket scientist. But she nearly gave up on her dream after experiencing an immensely challenging 13 years. She overcame school violence, poverty, sexual abuse by a formerly trusted family friend, and failing math and science grades. That was until a math teacher agreed to tutor her during a winter break at school. During that time, she experienced her ‘aha’ moment: The only person holding her back was herself. She decided to devote her life to overcoming fear and mastering the power of the human mind to overcome challenges. “I realized when I and others could remove fear, people can beat the odds. The trick was to rewire the brain with STEM.” She is living proof of that mastery. After school, she studied mathematics at California State University Northridge and graduated top of her university class and has gone on to a career of launching rockets at NASA. After nearly ten years at NASA, Olympia started her company and wrote the Answers Unleashed® book series. Today, she has appeared on TV news and programs and has been seen by over 28 million people. “Only 1 in 31,000 African-American women earn a Ph.D. in math or science or become a rocket scientist; a person has a better chance of being hit by lightning twice,” Olympia asserts. “I overcame these odds by finding mentors who helped me learn to overcome obstacles.”
Her mission? “Today, my mission is to help humanity overcome fear and find answers using STEM. People will gain confidence to solve daily problems as they learn to understand and embrace science.”

When asked about women’s critical issues in her industry today, Olympia highlights the need for greater representation. “There needs to be a larger percentage of women of color entering the STEM careers and moving into executive roles,” she emphasizes. She is vocal about this issue and actively contributes to its resolution through her educational programs to empower individuals to reprogram their brains for success. Her journey exemplifies how identity can both challenge and shape one’s career. As a woman of color, she became a propulsion engineer at an extraordinarily young age and was tasked with helping senior engineers redesign rockets. Being the youngest rocket scientist on record, she navigated through challenging career situations, interacting with senior engineers, and finding company-wide solutions. Despite her formidable challenges as a young woman of color in a predominantly white, male industry, Olympia turned adversity into opportunity. She found mentors, developed strategies, and succeeded to such an extent that she was awarded the Engineer of the Year Modern Day Technology Leader. Her experience is a potent reminder of the significant hurdles women, particularly women of color, face in STEM fields. However, it also showcases the incredible potential that can be unlocked when these barriers are overcome.
