NIKKI MCLEARY

Success to Nikki is working hard, having fun, staying positive, being part of the team, and keeping it real. That grounded philosophy has carried her from inner-city London to Abu Dhabi, from lecture halls to Hollywood sets, and from grassroots youth programmes to advising governments and executives. At every stage, she has been at the forefront of human performance optimisation, championing a marginal gains approach that proves small, consistent changes can create extraordinary results.

The Aha Moment That Changed Everything

Nikki grew up in South London, expecting a conventional city career. But one cold, wet day in 1996, on the slopes of Snowdon in Wales, she had a revelation. “I realised I was paying for a summit experience, and someone was making a profit. From that point on, I made it my mission to find a way to carve my own path, be my own boss, and generate opportunities that I could look back on and think: ‘Wow – I did that!’ And I often do.”

Rather than follow a traditional career path, she chose the harder but more rewarding journey off the beaten track, traveling across a multitude of countries and building an eclectic set of skills and experience over the past three decades.

Building a Career on the Frontlines of Human Performance

Nikki’s first post-graduation job? Editor for three sport and exercise science publications with a readership of more than 150,000. That early baptism into responsibility prepared her for the decades ahead, working across the full spectrum of performance on a mission to inspire, educate, and empower others to evolve and thrive.

“My passion is to translate research into evidence-informed, practical interventions that have a positive real-world impact, both at grassroots and elite levels.”

Hollywood and the Pandemic

A defining chapter came during the global pandemic, when Nikki served as Chief Scientific Advisor to World Extreme Medicine and Paramount Pictures. Her role was to translate rapidly evolving scientific data into protocols that kept film crews safe in jungles, deserts, mountains, and polar regions.

“As a high-performing team, we successfully navigated the unknown, translating emerging science and medicine as it was published into protocols affecting tens of thousands globally. In three years, we didn’t have one production stopped. Looking back, that is definitely a ‘Wow—I did that!’ moment.”

With more than 20 Hollywood credits, this complex project added another piece to the puzzle of how Nikki leads in high-stakes environments, where decision-making and accountability are crucial.

The Power of Marginal Gains

Ask Nikki what underpins her philosophy, and she comes back to one idea: “Do The Basics Well.”

“Everyone has the power to shape their own futures to some extent, and that’s an important fact to hold onto – it gives hope. If you make just one small positive change every day and encourage those around you to do the same, eventually that 1% adds up to a compound effect. Imagine the changes we could make with that collective mentality.” It’s an approach she applies everywhere, from lecturing GCC Ministries of Defence to running workshops for students. Excellence, she believes, is built on small, meaningful choices repeated consistently.

Looking to the Future: AI and Healthcare

Never one to stand still, Nikki is completing a postgraduate award in AI and Healthcare. “AI will undoubtedly revolutionise human longevity by revealing solutions to age-old challenges. I hope to use new knowledge to continue adding value and engaging with interesting opportunities that have positive real-world impact.”

One area of interest is how AI can contribute to correcting gender imbalance in human performance research. “For decades, studies disproportionately recruited male subjects, assuming results would generalise to women. This is not the case, and the move towards gender-specific research is long overdue.”

Defining Success and Overcoming Barriers

For someone with such a global career, Nikki is quick to put her own challenges in context. “I have the luxury of living in first-world countries due to being born with a British passport. The minor barriers or setbacks I have experienced are not worth mentioning compared to the daily sacrifices and obstacles women around the globe battle against. I am constantly in awe of those who achieve so much with so little.”

Yet, regardless of circumstance, she believes everyone can contribute and make a difference in the challenging world we currently find ourselves in. “Survival of hope relies on ordinary people making good choices.”

A Life of Real Impact

Whether she’s helping athletes walk 1,000km across the Abu Dhabi desert in 30 days or teaching medical professionals how to optimise performance under stress, Nikki’s impact spans industries and individuals. Ask her what drives her forward, and she comes back to something universal: the belief that people can – and should – thrive. Her message to women forging their own paths reflects the same philosophy: “Keep going, be true to your own beliefs, and don’t be too hard on yourself.”

Looking ahead, Nikki believes the greatest opportunities lie in harnessing technology and performance science to shape healthier societies. She sees AI, personalised health frameworks, and gender-inclusive research converging to help people live longer, stronger, and more fulfilled lives. “The field of human performance is moving fast. What excites me is creating practical tools that empower people – not just elite performers but everyday individuals – to thrive in a demanding world. That’s where the real impact will be.”

In the end, Nikki embodies what it means to be a Woman of the Future: grounded yet visionary, scientific yet human, relentless yet compassionate. She may not seek a legacy, but the ripple effect of her work – in science, health, education, and beyond – will be felt for generations.
