Marcia Caporn

CHIEF REVENUE OFFICER - CREDENZA3

Marcia Caporn has been taking calculated risks and ‘going all in’ since she excelled as a competitive Gold Medalist and two-sport All-American in soccer and golf at Stanford University. As Head of Revenue at ventured-backed startup Credenza, Marcia supports web3 enablement for sports and entertainment.

Her background as professional athlete turn senior litigator and sports executive lead her to specializing in strategy and development in the emerging revenue sectors for sports partners in Australia and the US.

New York-based Marcia explains Credenza enables brands to seamlessly integrate web3 technologies into traditional operations to enhance direct to-fan relationships and create new revenue streams. “By deploying Credenza’s proprietary technology to create web3 transition applications, we focus on igniting mass adoption in the sports market.”

Web3 future of commerce

Described as insightful and proactive, she comments on LinkedIn she’s very humbled and honored to work in the new wave of blockchain and web3.

The Credenza website states the rapidly evolving web3 ecosystem is poised to be the future of commerce. The company focus is on ‘helping brands be an early adopter and leader in the space to drive innovation, grow revenue, and provide enhanced value to their consumers.’ At Credenza, Marcia is bringing web3 solutions to professional and collegiate sporting properties and educating partners on new property rights implications (and opportunities) of web3.

Igniting new developments

She describes the Metaverse as ‘a 3D website that allows an interactive and immersive experience for consumers.’

“As more people move into the space, they bring with them their background and experiences, igniting new developments that’ll help drive new users and value.”

As for opportunities in the Metaverse, Marcia loves ‘the ability to tell stories and for consumers to enjoy them together.’

A frontrunner would be education; she imagines a world ‘where students play out history, Harvard case studies, and make hard decisions in the first person.’

She hopes ‘soon people around the world will be transported not only into different parts of the world but into different situations that help them grow as individuals.’

Yet, she’s concerned there are not enough applications that build bridges from traditional applications to web3 and stresses the need for ‘more innovators focused on how technology can make peoples’ lives better.

Sports background meets serendipity

Being early in the space, Marcia wants to build it fairly for all. With platforms having been greedy, it’s ‘our opportunity to build it right.’

She’s confident that by Credenza connecting athletes, sports teams and leagues via web3 assets, the benefits of smart contracts and decentralized commerce can supercharge fandoms for all stakehoders.

Marcia’s own background as a professional athlete has undoubtedly been invaluable. Writing in a 2021 article as COO of volleyballfocused digital platform p1440, she admits in her 20s, competitive sports was her life.

“‘[After retirement] I was lost because my identity was wrapped into my sport. I didn’t realize it had turned me into a machine. But lucky for me, it trained me to seek what I wanted and to stop at nothing to get it. It led me to law school, to the top of my business school class, and to saying YES even when I was scared of failure.”

Marcia recalls while working for p1440, the investor suggested she investigate how NFTs and web3 could apply to high school female athletes. A ‘deep dive’ into the space ignited her passion for ‘smart contract technology and what it could mean for the future of women’s sports.’

A serendipitous connection − with like-minded Credenza CEO Sandy Khaund − led her to developing the Home of Women’s Sports in the Metaverse and creating ‘an opportunity to enable women’s sports to be a leader [in web3] and show what’s possible.

Excited about more equity

“It takes a lot of work to build momentum and cultivate the fan base for small market sports and emerging sectors” but web3 offers ownership and control of these fandoms that have been denied by traditional platforms.

So, despite Marcia admitting there’s much more meaningful work to be done, she’s upbeat that with smart contracts and blockchain, it will become easy to share value and share ecosystems.
