DANA ODEH

FOUNDER AND CEO, ROCK N SHINE

“Every purchase has the power to change someone’s future.”

Someone’s livelihood can depend on a decision made in a shop thousands of kilometres away. Discovering that connection changed the way Dana Odeh thought about business. Behind every hand-embroidered scarf, handbag and piece of jewellery she encountered was someone preserving a skill, supporting a family or rebuilding a life. Once she understood the lives behind those products, retail became less about what people bought and more about the opportunities every purchase could create.

That realisation led her to establish Rock n Shine, a UAE-based business connecting ethical brands with consumers while creating sustainable opportunities for refugee artists. Every collection reflects the skill of its makers and the resilience of the communities they represent.

“I realised products could do so much more than fill shelves,” she says. “They could preserve craftsmanship, create economic opportunity, and give people a chance to rebuild with dignity.”

Building a Business That Reflects Her Values

Moving between cultures shaped the way Dana came to understand identity, belonging, and responsibility. Her Palestinian heritage strengthened her appreciation for communities whose traditions and creative heritage deserve to be preserved. Long before entrepreneurship entered the picture, she found herself drawn to the people behind the products she encountered. Learning about their experiences reshaped the way she viewed business and the role it could play in improving lives.

“My background taught me to be intentional about who I work with and what I choose to represent,” she explains. “I wanted to build something that reflected my values instead of trying to fit into what already existed. As I learned more about the people behind the products, everything changed. I stopped seeing business as simply selling products and started seeing it as creating opportunities.”

Every Rock n Shine partnership reflects the values Dana set out to build the business around. Working with organisations such as UNHCR and brands including SEP the Brand, Dana helps bring products created by refugee artists into retail spaces across the UAE, connecting customers with the people behind each piece while expanding access to new markets for the makers themselves.

Building the business demanded patience as well as conviction. Launching Rock n Shine in a competitive market meant encouraging customers to see value not only in the finished product but also in the traditional techniques, provenance and purpose behind it.

“There were moments when rebuilding from scratch felt overwhelming,” she reflects. “You keep adapting, stay focused on why you started, and continue moving forward. People don’t just connect with beautiful products. They connect with the people, the craftsmanship, and the journey behind them. Our goal is to make these products easier to find. The more accessible they become, the more opportunities we create for the communities behind them.”

Every Piece is Shaped by a Journey

Every purchase reflects a choice, and Dana believes those choices have the power to create lasting change. It also represents months of skill and perseverance before it reaches a customer’s hands. Choosing one helps create steady work for refugee artists while recognising the artistry behind every piece. More than sales, trust remains the measure she values most.

“Real change doesn’t always happen through one big moment,” she says. “It comes from small, intentional decisions that gradually change the way people think and shop. Success isn’t only about sales. It’s about customers returning because they believe in what we’re doing and knowing the communities we work with trust us as well.”

Each purchase creates a connection between people who may never meet, yet whose lives become linked through something thoughtfully made and thoughtfully chosen. For Dana, those connections demonstrate that business can create value far beyond the transaction itself.

Looking Beyond the Product

Consumers are becoming increasingly interested in where products come from, who made them, and how their purchases affect the wider world. Dana sees that growing awareness as an opportunity to strengthen ethical retail while helping more artists reach international markets. Making ethical products easier to discover remains an important part of Rock n Shine’s work, but building appreciation for the people and traditional techniques behind them matters just as much.

“I want people to wear their values,” she says. “When someone chooses something that reflects those values, they’re supporting far more than the item itself. What matters most to me is authenticity. I want to create something people believe in, where both customers and the communities we work with feel valued and supported.”

Looking back, Dana wishes she had spent less time waiting for certainty and more time trusting the purpose behind her work. “Don’t wait for everything to feel perfect,” she says. “Changing habits takes time, earning trust takes resilience, but if you believe in what you’re building, keep going.”

For Dana, success has never been measured solely by the growth of Rock n Shine. It lies in knowing that every thoughtfully chosen purchase helps preserve creative heritage, expand economic opportunity and remind people that behind every beautiful object is a maker whose work deserves to be recognised.
