BECKY BALDERSTONE

Founder at Ripe Events, Ripe Organic, Ripe Markets, The Collective

“Creativity, community, and entrepreneurship help build stronger futures.”

For Becky Balderstone, building a business has never been about scale for scale’s sake. It has always been about people: the producers behind the products, the entrepreneurs behind the brands, and the communities that form when space is created for connection to happen naturally.

As the founder of Ripe Organic, The Ripe Market, Ripe Events, and The Collective by Ripe, Becky has spent more than a decade shaping experiences that bring people together in meaningful, commercially sustainable ways. From organic food and community markets to retail environments and large-scale events, her work has helped define a more human, locally rooted way of doing business in the UAE.

“At its core, my work is about creating opportunity – for small businesses, creatives, and brands,” she says. “Through Ripe Markets, we build and grow platforms that make entrepreneurship more accessible, showcase homegrown talent, and bring people together through well-designed, purposeful experiences.”

Seeing the Gap and Acting on It

Becky’s journey began with a simple observation. She recognised a gap in the UAE market for accessible, fresh, locally sourced organic produce – and a disconnect between local producers and the wider community. Ripe was born as a response, initially focused on connecting people with organic farms and supporting small local producers.

As the markets grew, something else became clear. “As Ripe gained momentum through its markets and community events, I saw a deeper opportunity to champion homegrown talent, creativity, and entrepreneurship on a larger scale,” she explains.

That insight shaped the evolution of Ripe into three interconnected pillars: The Ripe Market; Ripe Events, a full-service agency delivering immersive, story-driven experiences; and The Collective by Ripe, a creative lifestyle and retail hub designed to support emerging brands with flexible, affordable spaces.

Learning to Evolve and Let Go

One of the most important lessons Becky has learned is the importance of adaptability.

“One of my most profound learnings has been the importance of staying open to new opportunities, even when they weren’t part of the original plan,” she says.

Markets change quickly, she notes. “Building Ripe taught me early on that markets evolve quickly – and to stay relevant, you have to evolve with them.”

That philosophy underpins her leadership. “My business mantra is simple: stay flexible, stay curious, and stay connected to your community.” She is also quick to credit her team. “The incredible team behind Ripe is the driving force in bringing our vision to life.”

Creating Value Through Community

The impact of Becky’s work extends across the UAE. Emerging entrepreneurs, independent creators, and small brands gain visibility and opportunity through The Ripe Market, The Collective, and Ripe Events.

Local artisans, makers, farmers, and homegrown brands benefit from supportive platforms where they can test ideas and build sustainable businesses. Residents and families experience inclusive spaces that prioritise quality and connection.

“I believe creativity, community, and entrepreneurship help build stronger futures,” she says. “When people are supported to create and grow their own ideas, they generate jobs, culture, and meaningful connections.”

Navigating Uncertainty

Like many founders, Becky faced one of her greatest challenges during COVID, when markets and events were forced to shut down overnight.

“It created huge uncertainty for us and for the small businesses that depended on us,” she recalls.

With little warning, everything had to change. “We had to rethink everything quickly, adapt, stay flexible, and find new ways to support our community.” The experience tested resilience and required fast problem-solving – but it also reinforced the importance of staying connected, even when physical spaces disappeared.

“It was a tough period,” she reflects, “but it taught me resilience, fast problem-solving, and the importance of staying connected.”

Pride, Purpose, and What Comes Next

One of the moments Becky is most proud of is launching The Collective by Ripe. “It was created to fill a real gap for small businesses ready to move beyond markets and test a more permanent retail presence without the risk of a long-term lease,” she explains.

The Collective gives brands a chance to build confidence, refine their offering, and connect directly with customers – often becoming a critical bridge between early experimentation and long-term growth.

Looking ahead, she expects a stronger focus on community-driven retail, flexible models, and meaningful in-person experiences. “Consumers are looking for authenticity, connection, and storytelling,” she says.

What excites her most about the future is the next generation. “As a mother of three, giving young people the confidence to test ideas, learn through doing, and believe in their own potential is incredibly important to me.”

Advice, Reflection, and Legacy

Looking back, Becky would offer her younger self one piece of advice: slow down. “The journey was full of challenges, and in pushing forward I often forgot to recognise progress,” she says. “Small victories matter, and taking time to acknowledge them makes the journey more meaningful.”

Her advice to other women forging their own paths is rooted in realism. “Don’t give up, even when growth feels slow or uncertain. Businesses rarely move in a straight line, so staying flexible and open to change is key.”

If given a billboard to speak to the world, her message is clear and characteristically grounded: Support Local. Help Small Businesses Thrive.

It is more than a slogan. It is the philosophy behind everything she has built – and the legacy she continues to shape across the UAE.
