Muhsinah Morris

Metaversity Director, Professor-CEO, Founder, Morehouse College/Metaverse United

Dr. Muhsinah Morris stands as a guiding light for the future of education and the potential for women in technology leadership. From her ground‑breaking work as the Director of Morehouse’s Metaversity VR Project to her innovative approaches with Metaverse United, her impact and influence shape future education paradigms.

Pioneering Virtual Reality in Education
Dr. Morris is pioneering the use of immersive VR in education. Under her leadership, the Morehouse Metaversity VR Project has boldly ventured into unchartered territory, with full academic courses taught using the MetaQuest 2 headset.

Partnering with edtech startup Victory XR, Morehouse’s Metaversity VR Project has constructed a digital replica of the Morehouse College campus in the Metaverse. This innovative approach to learning, initiated in the challenging times of the pandemic, has resulted in teaching more than 33 VR classes across various disciplines, with 13 faculty members delivering multiple cou“We are teaching our students how to become content creators as well as consumers of the product in an educational setting,” Dr. Morris states. This revolutionary approach has shown notable improvements, with an 11.9% increase in student grades and a 10% boost in class attendance.

Dr. Morris understands the transformative power of technology, particularly for underrepresented communities. “The future of work has changed,” she explains, emphasizing the urgency for students of all disciplines to become technologically adept. This has led her to forge meaningful partnerships with tech companies to ensure these emerging technologies don’t pass her students by.

“I do it because it’s imperative to make sure that they have the skill set necessary to be in service and leadership positions and to uplift their community to pass on generational knowledge and wealth,” Dr. Morris emphasizes. Introducing emerging technologies in education is not just a revolution in how we teach but also a direct pathway for creating new opportunities for communities often left behind by the digital divide.

Building the Metaverse Community
Her influence extends beyond education. She is also the founder of Metaverse United, a company dedicated to helping people find where they belong in the digital embodiment of the internet, the Metaverse. The company promotes safety, security, and accessibility, particularly for neurodivergent individuals.

In line with her mission, Dr. Morris shares: “We’re also working on caregiver skills training at a school called Our World School, a special needs school where we’re working with other stakeholders in the autism community to help bring forth mindfulness practice through VR.”

Fueled by her personal life as a mother of two sons diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, she sees the Metaverse as a powerful tool for teaching social skills and providing opportunities for this often marginalized population. This deep connection drives Dr. Morris to ensure the Metaverse is a safe and inclusive space for all.

A Trailblazer for Women and the Future
Dr. Morris’ ground‑breaking work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the HBCU Emerging Technology Award and the 2022 STEM Educator of the Year Award for STEM Women Atlanta.

However, her real reward is in the positive impact she is making. Through the power of technology, Dr. Morris is transforming the trajectory of education and creating a more inclusive world. Her commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in the technological space inspires many and underscores the significant potential women bring to the future of technology.

She’s passionate about ethical technological implementation in the future. “I want to create a legacy of excellence, but also of truth and ethical considerations being taken into account within the implementation of these technologies,” Dr. Morris asserts. Her ambition for technology goes beyond utility and practicality, focusing on ensuring we maintain our humanity as we leverage these innovative tools.

The Transformative Journey
Dr. Morris’s journey from an inquisitive little girl fascinated by the molecular world to an innovator is a testament to the transformative power of imagination and science.

“I was a very curious little girl with a special needs brother who had meningitis and left him brain damaged,” Dr. Morris reflects, “And so my imaginative play was to make sure that I found some type of understanding, but really a cure for my brother, and I didn’t really understand how, but I had a propensity for science and scientific discovery and was always trying to change what I could see in some capacity for the better.”

The incident that triggered young Dr. Morris’ scientific curiosity was tragic and profoundly shaping. “I always knew that I was going to do something to change the trajectory of humanity because I realized that certain tragedies in life could change the heart of a home and a family,” she shares.

This tragedy brought her to the field of chemistry, where she could explain the inexplicable. Her relentless pursuit of knowledge led her to uncover the interactions between the human dopamine transporter protein and cocaine, thus contributing significantly to our understanding of drug addiction therapies.

Later, at Morehouse, Dr. Morris took an innovative turn in her career — she began developing specialized lab equipment for those on the autism spectrum using 3D printing.

During the pandemic, she brought her Advanced Inorganic Chemistry course into the Metaverse in the immersive VR space, sparking an innovation that bridged the gap between the classroom and the molecular world.

Addressing the Gap in Tech
Dr. Morris identifies mentorship and sponsorship as critical issues facing women in her industry. She advocates for equal wages and representation, pointing out how these gaps silence diverse voices and ultimately hinder the advancement of technology. The need for male allies is clear, and Dr. Morris hopes to see more stepping up to ensure women can easily navigate the tech industry.

Her advice for other women? “Stay true to oneself.” She encourages women not to abandon their femininity or roles but to show up fully and authentically. “Don’t shrink yourself down,” she advises. She reminds us that resistance to change is only temporary, and the joy after conquering the obstacle is worth the struggle.

As a proud black woman from Decatur, Georgia, Dr. Morris acknowledges her unique position in the male‑dominated fields of chemistry and technology. Her identity has influenced her career and instilled in her a sense of responsibility to represent the voices of those not allowed at the table. She sees her ability to overcome obstacles as a way to impact others and encourage diversity in the industry.

Dr. Morris is more than just a scientist, a professor, or an innovator. She is a visionary dedicated to creating a more inclusive, equitable, and technologically advanced future for all. Her story reminds us that the future is not only about technology but also about people and humanity. And that, indeed, is a future worth striving sefor.
